A Brief Overview of Freckles

We have often heard of the phrase ‘beauty is in the eyes of beholder’ and this can be inter-related to the concept of freckles. Though, freckles for some people are seen as a skin defect whereas others view them as a quite cute feature which improves the overall look of a person’s face. With a precise view they can be seen as the clusters where the produced melanin is more concentrated

It has been seen that they occur due to genetic factor and are mainly seen on the face, whereas they can also be seen on the skin that is exposed to sunlight. Rays of sunlight penetrate the skin and they activate in the body melanocytes. It occurs because of the deposits of dark pigment and melanin.

These are small colored circular spots that are mostly seen on the skin of fair complexion people. Freckles may be brown, black, red, tan or yellow and are always darker than your skin. Also its seen in most of the cases that fair hair like blonde or red hair are generally common with the occurrence of freckles.

Freckles are more common with children and are a rare case with infants. They are seen occurring more commonly before puberty and very less cases have been seen for adults getting freckles. These spots occur due to the existence of MC1R gene (melanocortin-1 receptor) which is dominant. There are two kinds of freckles including lentigines and ephelides. Lentigines are the small black, brown or tan spots which do not fade in winters and are mainly darker than ephelides freckles.

Ephelides are flat light-brown or red spots that appear generally during summers and fades in winter season. Freckles are harmless, though there are some treatments to eliminate these spots that can be easily available. Avoidance from sun exposure should be taken as precaution and before stepping out people having freckles should apply sun block creams to avoid further production of melanin.
